How to install curtain rod?

Just when you think you can take advantage of the weekend to have a good rest, you suddenly find that you need to buy and install curtains at the weekend. It’s all right. Don’t worry. Installing curtains is very simple, and it takes less time than you expected. We will tell you how to install the curtain, what to install, and how to ensure the smooth installation process. Start with step 1 below!

Part 1 preliminary work for successful installation

1. Buy curtains.

If you haven’t bought curtains and curtain rods, you must first determine what style of curtains are suitable for you. There are several different styles of curtains, each of which can bring different effects to the room, and their functions are slightly different. You can choose from the following styles:

Cloth curtains are usually made of heavy cloth, which will wrinkle and need to be hung on the sliding curtain rod. When hanging, you must put the curtain hook into the fold and hang it on the curtain rod. There will be a rope on it, which can be pulled to control the opening and closing of the curtain. Rod curtains, perforated curtains and pull ring curtains need to be hung on ordinary round curtain rods. These curtains have either a cloth cover at the top that can be inserted into the curtain rod, or some eyelets or pull rings that can be inserted into the curtain rod. The bottom edge of the rod curtain may fall on the top or bottom of the windowsill, or it may fall all the way above the floor or even drag it to the floor. The last style is called floor mop curtain. The Cafe Curtain covers only the lower part of the window, providing a certain degree of privacy and allowing light to shine into the room. Many kitchen windows use this kind of curtain. The rods that hang it are usually installed in the window frame. The curtain behind the door has cloth covers at the top and bottom, and 2 curtain rods are required. The curtain rod will be installed on the door or fixed with a magnet. Back door curtains are usually used to decorate French doors and porch lights.

2 determine the height of the bottom edge of the curtain from the ground.

Unless you want to install coffee shop curtains, when buying curtains, you must remember that the curtains must be high enough to cover the whole window. [2] If you buy a pull ring curtain, make sure its height does not include the length of the pull ring. The floor curtain must be about 1cm above the ground, unless you live in a very humid environment. In this case, the height of the curtain above the ground should reach 2.5cm, because the curtain cloth will become longer in wet weather. If you want to install mopping curtains, just make sure the curtain cloth is long enough to be dragged to the ground. The lower edge of the curtain hanging under the windowsill must fall to 10 cm below the windowsill to ensure that the length is sufficient to cover the edge of the window frame below the window. Half of the curtain must be able to cover the windowsill.

3 Think about how much you want the curtains to open.

If you want the curtain to open completely without blocking the window, buy a curtain rod that is longer or has a corner. The latter will have a 90 degree corner at both ends, so you can pull the curtain to the corner or keep it close to the wall. The length of the side depends on the type and width of the curtain.

4 choose whether to install the curtain rod in the window frame or on the wall outside the window frame.

If the curtain rod is installed in the window frame, no matter how the curtain is pulled, it will cover part of the window. If the curtain rod is installed outside the window frame, the whole window can be exposed by opening the curtain. How to choose depends partly on the style and shape you want, but you may also have to consider the material of the wall or window frame. If the window frame is plastic, the curtain rod can only be installed on the wall. If there are gypsum walls, earth walls or stone walls on both sides of the window, it will be easier to install the curtain rod in the window frame. Remember, whether the curtain rod has a corner or not, the curtain can only be pulled to the support supporting the curtain rod, and how tight the curtain can be closed depends on its style. This parameter is called stack back. You may want the curtains to still cover some of the windows when they are open, or you may like the windows to remain open and let as much sunlight as possible into the room.

Section 2 correct installation

1 measure the height of the curtain rod.

Use a tape measure. Determine how high you want the curtains to be, and where you want the bottom edge of the curtains to hang, at the windowsill, below the windowsill, or on the floor. Remember, some styles of curtains have pleats or folds, which will be higher than the curtain rod. When measuring, subtract the length of this part. Mark this height with a pencil on both sides of the window frame or wall. Use a laser level to ensure that the marks on both sides are equal in height.

2 mark the position of the support.

After determining all the measurement data, mark the position of the screw with a pencil. [4] If the curtain rod is installed in the window frame, be careful not to let the drilling hole too close to the edge, because this will make the material too fragile and lead to wood cracking.

3 if necessary, add a bracket in the middle.

When installing the support, the length of the curtain rod shall be considered. Although most curtain rods are adjustable, do not let the distance between supports be too large to avoid the collapse of the middle curtain rod. In general, the length of the extended curtain rod shall not exceed 50%.

4 drill out the locating hole that can be screwed into the screw.

This prevents the window frame or wall from cracking when the screws are screwed in. If the bracket is installed on the wall and you want to use expansion bolts, make sure the positioning hole is large enough for the expansion bolts to be inserted. Only when the distance between the curtain rod supports just causes the screw hole to be located on the wall column and the screw cannot be screwed in, it is necessary to use the expansion bolt. If you do not want to use expansion bolts, make sure that the distance between supports is exactly 3 to 5 cm wider than the window frame.

5 fix the bracket to the window frame or wall with screws.

If you want to install them between the wall columns, you have to use plastic expansion bolts. They will be inserted into the gypsum wallboard to bear the weight of curtain rod and curtain and prevent screws from loosening and falling off due to stress. In addition to this situation, you can directly use the screws provided by the curtain rod or recommended in the manual.

6 check whether it is horizontal.

Install the curtain rod on the support, and then use the woodworking level to ensure that the curtain rod is horizontal. As long as you mark the position of the support and the height of both sides is the same, the curtain rod should be horizontal.

7 hang the curtains.

Remove the curtain rod again and hang the curtain. Then install the curtain rod on the support. So the curtains are ready! Well done! [5] When installing the pull ring curtain, it is best to use a thinner curtain rod. The thick pole will lift the curtain too high.

Tips

No level? Most smartphones can be downloaded for free or have a built-in level application.

If the curtain looks too short, don’t hurry to hang the curtain rod again. Hang the curtains for a day or two to see if the cloth will stretch a little. If the cloth can be ironed, you should probably iron it before hanging it.

warning

When hanging curtains, make sure they don’t cover the radiator or heater regulator, and don’t hang them too close to the ceiling to avoid difficulty in opening and closing.
